Description
This year’s two-sided ornament features the fireplaces from the House and Senate Chambers used by the Georgia General Assembly in the Georgia State Capitol. In 2000, a massive renovation of the Capitol was completed to restore the building as closely as possible to its original 1889 appearance. Most of the original fireplaces in each chamber had either been removed or covered, but original tile fragments found behind removed panels allowed restorers to reproduce the original colors and pattern of the tile, hearth and surround in the House Chamber. Due to the lack of similar historic remnants, the Senate leadership chose its own material and pattern for their reconstructed fireplace.
